Recall on Twin Turbocharged BMWs

After a special report done by ABC News BMW has voluntarily recalled roughly 130,000 vehicles. The vehicles in question run the N54 Twin Turbo engine which includes the 335i series from 2007 to 2010, the 2008 to 2010 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Coupes and the Z4 Roaster sDrive35i from 2009 to 2010.

For years BMW owners have been complaining about problems with these vehicles. There have been hundreds of complaints that the cars suddenly lose power, shake, backfire and feel like they are out of control. The problem stems from a faulty fuel pump.

BMW insists the vehicles are still safe and that they are only going into limp mode or safe mode. Really, this can happen on any make and model of cars Limp mode comes into play when the computer receives certain error codes at which time the computer limits power to prevent any further costly damage and for driver safety.

Although complaints have been piling up for years BMW chose not to recall the vehicles. BMW admits they have been struggling to fix the problem and have been replacing the faulty fuel pumps as they came in. With the latest recall they estimate 40,000 of the effected vehicles may require a new high pressure fuel pump.

What makes this an interesting recall is that it came hours after the report by ABC. BMW says the report caused them to act sooner rather than later.

The month long investigation was spearheaded by 20/20 anchor Chris Cuomo and began when a viewer approached him on the street to tell him of his car problems.

Along with this recall BMW also announced a recall on 20,000 2008 X5 Sports Activity Vehicles. These vehicles use a low-pressure fuel pump that will need to be updated.
